the heart of dec through our senior pastor

 DEC's Senior Minister Terry Sharbaugh

(the lady on his left is his stunning bride Kathie)

Though born in Pennsylvania, I am a product of the west (left) coast. Spent my youth hiking the Sierras, hunting and fishing. Got to admit it—I love the outdoors. Learned early to play the guitar and love music. My growing up days were centered in a church, but I can’t say it ever got to my heart. I would be 23 when I entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In a sense, that’s when life really began.

I met my wife Kathie in May of 1980 on a mission trip. It was on that mission that I first felt the tug of God to go into ministry. We soon got married and headed to Denver Seminary. After four years of theological training I came to Durham in the summer of 1986. Almost twenty years later, that little church of 150 has grown dramatically, and so has my family—two sons (Ben & Dan), two daughters (Jackie & Bethany), and a dog (Bo).

As I look back, all can say is to God be the Glory. It’s been a great time here at DEC and Lord has blessed us richly. I can’t think of a church I’d rather shepherd. As we look ahead, I pray many more great days are still to come.
